Griebk: Reducing Surplus Food Waste via a Discounted Mobile App

Social Challenge Addressed

Food businesses — restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets — regularly produce surplus food that goes unsold and is discarded at end of day. At the same time, many consumers, particularly students and low-income households, struggle with access to quality food at affordable prices. This dual waste — environmental and social — represents a missed opportunity for both businesses and communities.

Description of the Solution / Business Idea

Griebk is a mobile app that connects food businesses with consumers by offering unsold surplus food at discounted prices before closing time. Businesses list available items; users receive notifications and purchase at reduced rates. This reduces food waste, provides businesses with additional revenue from otherwise-lost stock, and gives consumers access to quality food affordably. The platform also generates ESG-relevant sustainability data for participating businesses.
