Social Challenge Addressed

LeafCheck addresses the social challenge of bridging the gap between consumer values and corporate practices. It combats misinformation, empowers ethical consumerism, supports small businesses, and fosters accountability and transparency. By delivering sustainability insights through accessible tools via a browser extension, it transforms sustainability from a niche concern into a mainstream purchasing criterion. The ultimate social impact is a shift toward a more equitable, transparent, and environmentally responsible marketplace where consumers can confidently align their choices with the collective good.

Description of the Solution / Business Idea

LeafCheck is a browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) that provides sustainability ratings for companies and products. Primary features include: Leaf Rating Display (1-5 leaf rating on company websites and product pages), Quick Info Panel (expandable details on sustainability practices), Alternative Recommendations ("Better Options" sidebar with sustainable alternatives), and Impact Tracker (personal dashboard showing user's sustainable purchasing impact).

Rating Methodology: Environmental impact (40%) covering carbon footprint, waste reduction, resource use; Social responsibility (30%) covering labor practices, community impact, diversity; Transparency (20%) covering public reporting, third-party certifications; Innovation (10%) covering sustainable product development, circular economy practices.

Data Sources: Public ESG reports and sustainability disclosures, third-party certifications (B-Corp, Fair Trade, LEED, etc.), government databases (EPA, SEC filings), and community feedback and verification.

Secondary services include a Small Business Portal (free profile creation for businesses <500 employees, documentation upload, analytics) and Educational Resources (sustainability guides, monthly impact reports, greenwashing detection tutorials).
