To make your stay comfortable and hassle-free, here are some useful details about transportation, banking, health, and safety on Lesvos.

Transportation

Public Bus

Local buses connect Mytilene centre with the airport and key locations in the city, for less than €2 per ride. The departure bus stop for the ride to the UAegean Campus (10 min.) and the airport is on the central "Sappho Square". For up-to-date schedules, check local bus service here.


Taxi prices

A taxi ride from Mytilene Airport to the city centre takes about 11 minutes and costs around €15, while the one from the University of the Aegean campus to the city centre is about €6. Taxi fares within the city and to nearby sites are reasonable, but always confirm the estimated price beforehand!


Rent a car

Renting a car is not necessary if you are coming just for the Summit/ Winter School days, but it's the best way to explore the island if you are staying a little longer!

Banking and Payments

ATMs

Several ATMs are available in Mytilene city center and one in the University of the Aegean campus.

For visitors outside the Eurozone:

We recommend withdrawing cash only if necessary, preferably from the National Bank of Greece ATMs in Mytilene centre. When withdrawing, choose the "no currency conversion" option to avoid extra fees.


Cards

Visa, MasterCard, and most major credit/debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. The official currency is the Euro €.


Additional Tips

  • Wi-Fi is available at most shops, hotels and restaurants. You can connect to the Eduroam network at the University of the Aegean campus, using your university credentials.
  • Average price for a local meal, including beverages, per person: €15–€25
  • Tap water is drinkable and offered for free in most cafes and restaurants.
  • For phone calls to Greek numbers, use the country code +30. (Landline to Athens: +3021, Landline to Lesvos: +302251)
  • Electric plug: European plug with two round metallic pins (type C, also known as "Europlug") or similarly compatible (type F, also known as "Schuko"), 220-230V 50Hz.
